You’ve Already Tried Everything the Books Said

The sticker chart. The timer. The consequence you hated enforcing anyway.

You followed the plan exactly. The meltdown this morning tore it to shreds.

Now the school’s number comes up on your phone and your whole afternoon gets hijacked.

The Part You Don’t Say Out Loud

You lay awake at night replaying the screaming match.

You didn’t mean to overreact. But everyone has their limits. The look on their face broke your heart.

By morning you decide the outbursts are proof of something about you.

Nearly every parent I work with arrives having decided the same thing about themselves.

Time for a reality check.

Break the Escalation Loop

What Your Child’s Meltdown Really Means

A meltdown is a nervous system that has tipped past what it can handle – the behavior is the alarm system.

A time-out quiets the alarm and leaves the distress running underneath, where it comes back later as defiance, anxiety, or a slammed door.

I begin with the way your child’s brain and body actually work, and we build the plan around that.

Become the Calm Your Child Can Count On

This work trains you to be your child’s external nervous system, so your settled body becomes the thing they borrow until they can do it themselves.

  • Spot the small signals of distress before they erupt
  • Steady yourself first, which is what steadies your child
  • Answer what the behavior is asking instead of just its volume
  • Hold a boundary without a threat sitting behind it
  • Leave the house on time, connected rather than depleted

Once connection leads, the power struggles lose their leverage.

The Three Shifts That Change Your Home

  1. 1

    De-escalation and Safety

We map the escalation loops in your house. You learn what to do in the next meltdown, before your own temper goes.

    Everyone can breathe again.

  2. 2

    Attunement and Coregulation

The focus moves from what your child is doing to what your child is feeling. We practice catching distress early, and using your calm to settle theirs in the moment.

    Cooperation comes from trust.

  3. 3

    Integration and Resilience

Your child builds their own regulation for school, friendships, and disappointment. You get your identity, your marriage, and your hobbies back.

    The change outlasts childhood.

Why Trust Me as Your Partner in Healing

The Parent Is Part of the Work

You’re in the room and in the work, because the person your child borrows calm from is the one who’s there at 6:00 PM on a Tuesday.

Built for a Sensitive Nervous System

My office has dim lighting, chairs that move, and space to get up and walk, so a child who comes undone in a bright, busy room can settle in mine.

Neurodiversity Sits at the Center

I work from the position that your child’s brain isn’t broken, and the plan we build fits the brain they actually have.

Jessica Waterman, LCSW

Hi, I’m Jessica.

At 33, I got my Autism and ADHD diagnosis. Three decades of things I’d explained away suddenly had a shape. I know the particular ache of feeling a beat out of sync with the people around you and having no word for why. The longing for connection that sits right next to needing solitude the way you need oxygen. That contradiction is how a lot of us are built.

As an LCSW and a Certified Autism Specialist, I’ve walked adults through this same discovery again and again. First a clear, credible answer. Then the education and language to finally advocate for themselves.

Performing well in parts of your life doesn’t mean you aren’t struggling underneath it. My work is to show you why, and to help you find the specific accommodations that let you stop forcing yourself through a world that wasn’t built for your brain. Undiagnosed autism in adulthood is a lonely place to live. You are not alone in it here.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. I meet everybody where they’re at, and for plenty of kids that means moving around the room or saying very little for a while.

Most of the time, yes. A lot of what we build runs through you, so sessions usually include time with your child, time with you, and time with both.

Families tend to notice the crisis moments changing first, and the deeper shifts take longer. I won’t put a date on it, and I won’t send you off the moment things get quiet.

Those tools come with an expiration date. What works at five loses its power at thirteen, so we build motivation out of love, trust, and mutual respect instead.

Yes. I work with families across New York by telehealth, including some weekend times.

One version is the one you already know: the 2:00 AM worry, the eggshells in your own kitchen, the years of your child’s youth going by in a blur of conflict.

The other one has your child leaning into you when they’re overwhelmed, borrowing your calm until they find their own. It has you on the couch at night without the heaviness in your chest, knowing they will always see you as their safe harbor.

Your child is still reaching for you, and there is time to reach back.
